GALVESTON COUNTY JUDGE MARK HENRY ORDERS FLAGS AT HALF-STAFF FOR SLAIN DEPUTY

September 1, 2015

In honor of slain Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Darren Goforth, County Judge Mark Henry has ordered Texas flags to be lowered half-staff throughout Galveston County.

On Monday, Gov. Greg Abbott ordered Texas flags in Harris County and at the Capitol to be lowered to half-staff.

Goforth was pumping gas into his patrol car Friday when a man approached from behind and shot him 15 times, a prosecutor said Monday.

Investigators later arrested a suspect, Shannon J. Miles of Houston, on a capital murder charge.

In a statement, Abbott called it a “deliberate and heinous crime,” and said Texans revere the men and women in law enforcement who put their lives on the line every day to protect and serve their communities.

Judge Mark Henry has decided to honor Goforth in Galveston County as well.

“I am friends with many of the deputies in Harris County and this incident hits us all very close to home,” Henry said. “I wish to extend my deepest condolences and prayers to the family and friends of Deputy Goforth.”

Flags will remain at half-staff until after the funeral on Friday Sept. 4. Services will be held at Second Baptist Church on Voss Road in Houston at 11:00 a.m.
